Bug eyes, tail kinks, and other birth defects...

lostkauze Jun 03, 2004 03:26 PM

Hi all. First off, Congrats to Garrick! And a happy birthday for Marcia, the big 5-0.

Anywho, I don't want to sound naive or anything, and I dont have any animals with kinked tails, or bug eyes etc, but have a few questions.
Why do people suggest not to breed animals with these 'aliments'?

Can the develope after they animal has hatched (later on in life)?

Other health issues related to defects...

Thanks all, just thinking about the reasoning behind breeding animals with 'physical disabilities'. Anything will appease me, so tell me what you know! lol

Leos with "bug eyes" I've heard end up going blind and dying early...so there's an obvious reason not to breed them (although I'm not sure if that's a genetic defect or not...I still wouldn't breed them). Kinked tails can be either genetic, incubation, or injury related I believe...and are not visually appealing...also depending on the severity of tail kinking, it can lead to mobility problems. I've also heard that leos don't have to be born with kinked tails, they can develop them as they grow. I believe the problem arose after a lot of inbreeding...and it will only get worse from continueing the breeding of animals with kinked tails. I could be wrong about that stuff though...but its generally not a good thing to breed animals with severe abnormalities that may affect quality of life or may eventually affect quality of life in future generations.

Its the same thing with Dogs too
Dogs with hip problems that are prone to them are never breed, or dalmations who are prone to blindness are never breed in hopes of breeding the trait out of the species. its usually cuz its deterimental to the animals in some way.

Its because us humans have the "ability" to alter and shape evolution and chose to do so. People want certain traits so they breed for those and exclude others.
Personally i'm worried about the Giant morphs. Has anyone had a "giant" live till old age without seeing and ill effects?
For example a bigger animal that was naturally smaller might have larger strains on its legs, etc.
Anyhue just a thought
have a good one all
