New iggy

iwana Jun 03, 2004 06:17 PM

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share the news -- my husband and I adopted a new iggy. This is by no means our first iguana. Before adopting him, we had 2 adults and have adopted two others in the past. This iguana is a large male that belonged to a good friend of mine, who could no longer care for him.

His name is "Bidule" (which is French for "thingamagig"... LOL) and he is a delight. After just a few weeks, he has already gotten settled into his new home, despite the fact that he is already 8 years old, and he is slowly learning to trust us.

Last week, we brought him out in our back yard and he happily explored our lilac bushes, not understanding the concept of gravity and that the little branches could not support his weight. LOL

Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Yeah, I think I remember from your past posts that your iggy can't climb. That's really too bad, but I'm sure he's very happy with you, because you seem to take really good care of him.

It's really great to see Bidule enjoy himself so much. He spent the first 8 years of his life living in a terrarium with nothing to look at but a wall. This is not to criticize the person who took care of him last; she is a very good friend of mine and really did the best she could with him. He is just such a curious creature and needs a lot of stimulation, so she did right by him and found him a new home -- our home.

She misses him greatly but is assured that he is in good hands. We were very worried at first that he wouldn't be happy with us, because he was so used to being with just one person who cared for him deeply, but he seems to be pretty happy!

but aren't you afraid that your iggie will start to run, and you will lose him?

Yeah, that's always a bit of a concern, that's why there were two of us watching him very closely. Also, our yard is very big and we make sure to put him as far away as any big trees (or the road) as possible, so that if he does run, we have time to catch him before he gets into any trouble.
