Reptile Gardens - South Dakota

demillar Jun 03, 2004 08:06 PM

I am posting this from my boyfriends account. While relocating across the country from WA state to MA, we decided to go to Mount Rushmore... however, on the road to Rushmore, I saw something I felt would be far more interesting... Signs for Reptile Gardens.

It was a must stop, as both of us are huge herp fans, especially my boyfriend - who loves all things venomous. Our first stop, was the Venomous snake exhibit. While there, our first meeting was with taphillips. We spent hours talking with him and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. It was refreshing to talk to someone with the knowledge and hands on experience that he had. To think that he took time out of his day to stand and educate and share knowledge was a great feeling. He was even kind enough to bring out a baby taipan they had just received and find us so that we could see it up close and personal.

We would like to thank you Terry, for your time, your humor, your knowledge. It was a great pleasure for us, and had to be the best part of our trip (other than arriving home after 3600 miles of driving... LOL). We hope to speak again some time.

And to all of you out there, we HIGHLY recommend stopping by Reptile Gardens if you ever get the chance. It will amaze you and fill you with awe.

P.S. Terry, did the anaconda lay yet?

Yup, "Wanda the anaconda" dropped 56 babies and quite a few slugs..... last night as a matter of fact! Bitey little buggers.
Were you here before or after we got Maniac, our huge Saltwater Crocodile from Australia?
I think we got it after you guys left, trust me, it's worth a return trip, 3600 miles? Ya, it's worth the trip. he's huge!
Drop me a line anytime!

We were there while u were preparing for the salty. We spoke about him as well, i believe. Hey, i would love to come back!! I thoroughly enjoyed it... but only if u can be our tour guide again. lol I did get kind of cheesed while u and Doug were talking, and some kids were there with their dog and were keying the dog on the snakes on the lower level... i said something to them... got a dirty look. lol

And i still think the gabby is the most beautiful snake in the world... and that chameleon of yours can come home with me any time. I am telling ya, he really liked me. lol

I do hope to come back some day. For sure! And i have been and will recommend the place to all who want to hear. I have a friend that i used to play poker with who is going to school to be a herp in Illinois. I told him that it is a MUST for him to go there during his studies. And i have told him to look you up.

Look forward to speaking again soon.

Nice goin', Terry! I must say that you probably enjoy seing someone with a real interest in herps come through the establishment. I know I did when I was in your position at a place here in Sofla. Yeah, it took time away from other things to spend time with folks like that, but I always felt it was worth it. The vast majority of visitors have no clue & really aren't all that receptive to getting one. I especially enjoyed talkin' to kids who had an interest. One of 'em turned out to be a pretty good herp photographer & eco-tour guide.

Keep up the good work, Terry. ~~Greg~~

Be sure and look Terry up, if you want to get an abundance of knowledge.

I am a native of South Dakota and a herp lover. Reptile Gardens is a must see for anyone interested in herps. I was back last summer and it is nice to visit someplace I went as a child and have a better feeling about it as an adult. I am moving to Minnesota this month and am going to have to plan a trip out to the Black Hills this summer to Reptile Gardens. I want to see the big Saltie!!!

Not to toot my own horn....
But this is the biggest animal year we have had that any of us can remember, and some have been there for over 35 years!

Huge Saltwater Croc,
Inland Taipans, ( all three taipans )
Mexican Mojaves,
Okinawan Habu's
More King cobras than I can shake a stick at. ( I just got 6 more Kings last week) and trust me I shake a stick well "
2 forms of Russells Vipers
Willards Rattlesnakes.....
Boy the list goes on and on!

Plus in the next ten days a full load of reptiles from Australia. many for the first time in an American Zoo....
Everyone used to call us "Fangs R Us"! how they couldn't be more right....!

Definately something for everyone!

Keep an eye on our website, I am in the process of updating our inventory list as we speak.

I am telling you, it was the best part of the trip. I could have given two cents for rushmore... we didnt even stop - i shot vid on the run LOL. But we spent at least 2.5 hours with you... and we never saw anything outside, just the snakes, et al. Thank so much again, for a wonderful day and something i can remember fondly for the rest of my life. I promise we will be back some day...without a doubt.
