Question from Venom ER

demillar Jun 03, 2004 08:29 PM

Was watching Venom ER the other night and saw a part where the Ground Squirrel is immune to the bite from the Southern Pacific. They showed a squirrel taking on a rattler, and then apparantly munching on it in a later shot (not sure if that is what it was eating or not.). They also showed where they are taking blood from these squirrels and studying it to see how the immunity works, as it may be of use for humans at some point. And then the discussion of how the snakes venom is now changing, with more neurotoxins, to try and overcome the immunity of the squirrel.

Now there is a debate in the house. He thinks that they are showing some immunity, but not total immunity. I know I saw on the show where they were saying the ground squirrel is immune and even showed a snake striking the squirrel and the squirrel being fine.

Can any of you shine any light on this subject for us?

Immunity & venom strength is constant, evolving process. The squirrel may be up at this point in time, & may have something very close to immunity. Bear in mind that there are many variables involved in snakebite & its survivability. The squirrel that was filmed surviving a bite may not have received a lethal dose of venom.
