Kisatchie question

cmsuphoto Jun 03, 2004 09:00 PM

Ok, question for breeders (read Don) about the Kisatchie corn. Is it possible to breed this trait of corn with others to get het for Kisatchie? What if you cross it with fun stuff like creamcicle, candycane, bloodred, or motley? Any thoughts?

Hey AJ,

Actually Kisatchies are a subspecies of cornsnake. I believe they are Elaphe(panthertrophis is also accepted) guttata slowinskii. I think now there are 3 subspecies of corns, guttata(corns), emoryii(emorys rat snake) and slowinskii. The Kisatchies have only been declared a subspecies in the last year or two and some people still consider them corn snakes. By breeding Kisatchies into guttata you would be creating an intergrade like cremesicles. I actually bred my male Kisatchie to my snow last year for a future breeding project and hopefully I'll see positive results in the future. Don is definitley the expert on this subject and he has some nice looking Kisatchies to boot.

Take care,
Rick S.

Kistatchie "corns" have been deemed to be a separate species (not a subspecies) from cornsnakes. The new listings of the pertinent species are:

Pantherophis guttatus = corns
Pantherophis emoryi = Great Plains rat
Pantherophis slowinskii = Kisatchie

Because of the new designations (which, admittedly, could change again as easily as they were changed THIS time!), there are no subspecies of cornsnake any longer. Creamsicles are now technically hybrids instead of intergrades, and any crosing of Kisatchies and corns will produce hybrids as well.

All that aside, Kisatchie is not a trait to be passed down to offspring by way of mendelian genetics. It is a regionally preserved animal that (at least according to one scientist) is genetically different enough from corns to justify its own species designation. Even if it were not a different species, though, it would still be impossible to be "het" for Kisatchie, just as it is not possible to be "het" for okeetee or miami phases.
