WC Northern Pine

Rick D Jun 03, 2004 09:16 PM

A friend of mine just caught a wild caught Northern Pine that was crossing a road in Autauga, co., AL. When we examined it at first I was pretty sure it was gravid as you could see and feel where the eggs are. But these seem very small and hard for eggs she is going to lay and I'm wondering if she may have just eaten some bird eggs. If that's the case then she should digest them within a few days. It would be great if they are her eggs!!!!

Most likely they are her eggs if they were in the rear half of the body. The stomach is in the forward half of the body, and bird eggs would be crushed as they go down the esophagus. Good luck.

Hi,
I'm very interested in the Autauga County Pine you recently found, in scientific terms.Did you photograph this animal yet, or perform scale counts? Also, what kind of habitat was it found in? Autauga is well south in the range; I currently have two live Alabama specimens, one from Jackson County, the other from DeKalb County. I also have preserved specimens from Calhoun, St. Clair, and Shelby County. Good luck with the animal, and hopefully we can correspond.
