8 Month Old Pastel male sires fertile clutch....

serpentcity Jun 03, 2004 09:24 PM

This morning a virgin female laid 3 fertile eggs and 3 slugs subsequent to matings by 8 month old Mark Petros-produced Pastel male.

The male was hatched early July '03. By late January he was over 700 gm. He was cooled moderately through January and continued to feed. He was cooled more vigorously through Feb, and in late Feb was placed with a super-high yellow virgin female. No interest whatsoever. After a few days, he was placed with another less yellow virgin female, about 2000 gm. The following morning he was locked-up with this female and remained so for at least 24 hours. The male then went through a shed cycle. In late March he bred this female once more for at least 10 hours. The female ovulated mid April, shed 5/3, and laid 6/3. Two full-sized fertile eggs, one smaller fertile but partially-slugged egg, and 3 slugs.

The long interval between last mating and ovulation (over 3 weeks), plus the fact she was bred just twice, would account for the presence of slugs. In 3 prior clutches this season where different males have bred females at least 3 times with the last mating closer to ovulation, I have obtained 100% fertility.

Hopefully a PASTEL will be hatching in about 55 days!!!

These observations confirm that males less than 1 year old CAN sire fertile eggs.

Congrats Scott! I'm sure you've got your fingers crossed for
2 of 3 to be pastels.

Just a note:
last copulation to ovulation can be much longer than a few weeks.
In fact, I've had several clutches (100% fertile) that had
last breeding several (3-4) months before ovulation. This is
particularly important when you are trying to be careful in
documenting which male sired which clutches (Side note: I always
keep the females with the same male for the entire season just
to avoid any confusion...).

Best of luck!

...why do you think the males didn't want to breed/females weren't receptive? Most of my experience is with boas and females become increasingly receptive as ovulation nears. Same for most of the BPs I bred this year (but not the female my Pastel bred). I think some of these really young males' sperm supply may vary in the quantity of viable mature sperm available-this may be reflected in some slug production by the female. SJM

Congrats man, that's awesome! I'd be PUMPED!

But I think it was "confirmed" many many times over the last 10 years.

This guy was 1000g at 8 months of age and sired 3 clutches last year. He's 18 months now and has sired 11 clutches for 2004.

Congrats on your success with the male!!! It truley is amazing that males can produce a fertile clutch at such a young age when taking into consideration the average lifespan of a ball python. There is much debate at what age/weight one should breed balls. I am convinved there is no harm for males within the first year, but what about females? Most claim they should be at least 1500g and I have not heard a suggested age. I have a female that weighs in at 879g and hoping to breed her next season. I do not know her age but thinking she can not be much more than one year old ( Truely not sure ). If she can get close to 1500g should I breed her or wait until the following season?

Anyways, hope you get some pastels out of the clutch. Awesome success story.

...got to balance economics with welfare of the female. If a female is ready at 1500 gm she'll be even better off at a year older and 2000 gm, etc. It's largely a personal decision. Good luck! SJM
