Sulcata and burrows

StephanieA Jun 03, 2004 09:33 PM

Yesterday my 2-year old sulcata escaped from his fenced off pen in my backyard and we haven't been able to find him since. He could not have escaped from the yard itself, but I am worried that he went down into the desert tortoise burrow since there is pretty much no where else he could be. He hasn't come out yet, and so I was wondering if staying down in a burrow for more than 24 hours was normal or could be expected. It is unknown how deep this burrow goes...it was first dug by my rabbit and after the rabbit died, the adult desert tortoises took it over. Could he get lost or confused down there? Is there anything I can do to encourage him out? I placed a big plate of food near the hole but that only attracted the other tortoises out.

thanks

If anyone could give me any advice on how to coax him out of the burrow, please let me know. It's not Saturday night and he's been down there since Wednesday morning and won't come out. Please help, I am desperate.
