At the minimum.
I started out my beardie in a 40gallon breeder, but eventually I felt he would be much happier in a larger cage, so we upgraded.

what would you uprade too? i want to get the last cage ill need.
I think somewhere between 70-120 gallons is a happy medium. They are usually about 4ft long and 1.5-2ft wide. You can always go bigger, but I believe that's a good average cage size for the casual beardie owner, not too small not too big.
I just think the 40 gallons are like the bare minimum. I've got one, and I've only used it to house my beardies while I arrange a larger enclosure.
