What do you all keep besides corns?...

carl3 Jun 03, 2004 11:49 PM

I was intrigued by the thread below and was amazed at Mike's ATB's...very nice..I had to put on sunglasses for that red phased ATB. ANYWAY, I was just curious what some of you kept besides corns.

Here is my Solomon Island Ground Boa...not too common but in my opinion one of the BEST boas out there. They stay small and have lots of variation from silvers to reds to white, etc...now if anyone could figure out exactly what triggers newborns' feeding response.lol.

Another one of this years favorites goes to...

Or maybe this little one...

And the award for crankiest of the year goes to...

That Solomon Island Ground Boa is beautiful. Unfortunately, the only one's I've ever seen first hand were dead. Working as a staff member for my herp society's reptile show, I saw 2 babies that a vendor had sitting on his table, both belly up. I don't know if he just brought out the box they were in without looking at them or what, but I will never deal with this vendor, I can tell you that.

And to answer your question, I don't have any other herps besides my corns. I do have a dog though (American Eskimo mutt). If I do end up getting more herps besides corns, they would be a crested gecko and possibly a beauty snake of some sort.

a really old bird. Its my parents bird that's been in our family for a long time. They bought it 20 years ago as a baby male bird and shortly after found out from an expert vet that it was an old female, probably caught from the wild since few were actually captive breeding any birds that long ago.

This bird HATES me...and always tries to bite whenever I walk past. She only loves my father and simply tolerates my mother since she cleans/feeds her.

My sister and I always fight over who has to take her if something happens to my folks OR if she outlives them.lol. Also, I maybe moving in temporarily with my parents while inbetween homes and I had a terrible thought of 'what if...'one of my snakes got loose..uh oh...d'oh...it would be awful. Just a few small details to consider if I have to move 35 snakes.lol

Well, keep trying to guess....you're close.

Great pictures! I was looking into a salmon island boa but heard they can be hard to get to eating mice. Yours is cool!
I have a ghost corn, 'Janome', and a amel corn, 'Diamond'. Also a tangerine honduran milksnake, 'Zorro'. My biggest snake is a 5 foot jungle carpet python, 'Safari'.
Then there are my 2 dogs, a beagle mix 'Rosie' and 'Ranger' is a shep/dobie mix.
Don't forget the 6 house cats...4 are mine and 2 are my sisters:
Smokey, 20 years old
Shadow, 12 years old
Daisy, 10 '' ''
Emily, not sure how old, sis cat
Jazzy & Jaffa are litter mates, 2 years old.

New additions...??? There is a reptile expo here this weekend!

carl3 Jun 04, 2004 08:10 AM

extremely difficult to get started which is why they haven't received as big a following as other boas. They remain so small, even as adults I've seen some smaller than corns.

I kinda compare them to hogg island boas in terms of their status/environment b/c I bet they go extinct in the wild before anyone ever really figures out what triggers a feeding response from them. When you ask, people often list a WIDE variety of prey items that pretty much encompasses everything any snake would eat.lol. This one I had force fed feeder guppies (fish) and them moved onto force feeding pinkie heads and after awhile, less and less effort and now she has been taking meals on her own since last fall. Well, thanks for your interest and if you are interested in learning more about them, a guy named Randy started a Yahoo group for candoia lovers...you can check it out by going to my links section on my site, which I believe has a link to it.

Well as for non-herps I have a cat and a lapdog. As for herps I have 8 corns, Eastern Kings, Brooks Kings, Speckled Kings, Jungle Carpet Pythons, Boa Constrictors, and a Russells Viper that sounds like a steam kettle when agitated. You can hear it all over the house. Very fascinating though.

I have one amel corn, a bearded dragon, a crested gecko and two guinea pigs. Had to get rid of the mice and rats I had due to moving but plan on restarting a rat colony in a few months. I have enough food frozen to keep my snake happy for about 3 months.

scritch....my sugar glider

an interesting 'bug' we got at the last White Plains show

not sure what it is, got it at petco, labeled a Nicaraguan Alligator lizard...would love to know the latin.

Then there is the dogs(bullmastiff and two border collies) cats, birds (congo african grey, cockatiel, parakeets)all the other herps......

That bug is cool, some kind of Mantis perhaps? I wanted to get one (not that neat looking, but a type of fancy Mantis) but I heard their life spans were very short. The one they had at the pet store was very tame and you could hand feed her. I'm glad I didn't buy her because she died a few weeks later and if I'd bought her I'd have thought it was my fault. Hopefully the kind you have lives longer.

had a w/c female chinese mantis for 4 months. wouldn't get off car window so took her home. she layed an ootheca (egg sac) then died a couple weeks later. they are amazing insects but usually only live a year. Very sad to watch her die, really miss her.
Love your pics especially the leo, python, ratsnake, and cat.

Here are my snakes in the order I adopted them...

This is Bear, my Carpet Python (named because he gives great Bear Hugs and is sweet as a Teddy Bear). He is 7 feet long and weighs 9 pounds.

Bear was supposed to be my ONLY snake. That's it, just one, don't need any more...

Well, that was fine and dandy until I started looking at Hognose snakes and fell for this little guy. My logic? Bear can be my only BIG snake, and Wilbur (named because he is a HOGnose) can be my only LITTLE snake...

OK, two snakes, that's enough, I can stop now...

But then again, I have one Big snake and one Little snake, but no Medium sized snakes! I was offered a free Yellow Rat that had been a rescue case the year before, was not handled, rarely fed (one live mouse per month), and kept in a small filthy enclosure (multiple old sheds, mouse and snake droppings everywhere). My friend had taken him in just to get him out of that environment, had him in a nice clean enclosure and fed him lots of f/t mice and rats. He offered him to me and how could I say no?

Turned out, he is a mix of Yellow and Everglades (per popular opinion on the Rat Snake Forum). I named him Pumpkin. He's got attitude but is handleable and I think he's gorgeous...

OK, now I have one small, one medium, and one big. Surely I'm done...

I accidentally asked to see a Russian Sand Boa at the local pet store last month. I'd never seen one and it was hiding. I was curious what it looked like. Uh Huh, just wanted to take a peek, that's all...

Meet Fang, who I can now peek at any time I want... He is named after Hagrid's dog from HP (the new one opens today, I'm going to see it in 3 hours, can't wait!)

Fang is awesome, he's under 2 feet long so I initially put him in a 20 long, but he's incredibly active and loves to climb so he now has a 40 breeder with a big piece of Grape Vine to climb on.

Well, I'm plumb out of excuses now. It was a losing battle from the beginning, I should have known I could not stop at ONE snake, or two or three for that matter. When Traci offered me this beautiful Corn, how could I resist? I know this string is for our pets other than Corns, but I can't resist tossing in a pic of my precious Mysty...

Will I stop at 5 snakes? No, I already have a new snake coming soon. I've been waiting for months for him. He is a Banded Water Snake. I've never seen him in person, and only have 2 pictures of him. He had a blister over his eye that popped and he may or may not lose the eye. The current owner decided to hang onto him during his recovery. His name is Ripley. Here is one of the pics that they emailed to me...

I also keep Leopard Geckos (won't post pics of all of them)

Here is a pic of my favorite Leo "Scooter" when he was just a little guy two years ago...

He grew up into quite a hansome fellow...

I have lots of other high end fancy morphs, but Scooter is my friendliest Leo and goes with me to Kid's Club and other public demos to help entertain and educate the public about reptiles. Anther excuse I've used multiple times when buying new pets "this one would be GREAT for demos!"

This is Cocoa, a very old Fat Tail Gecko who lost his tail, lost the tips of all but 2 of his toes, and almost died from mouth rot before I adopted him. Poor guy. Despite all this, he's super sweet and also accompanies me on demos...

Here is Trevor, my White's Tree Frog, named after Neville's toad from HP...

And here are Chompy and Grimli, Solomon Island Eyelash Frogs...

Can't leave out my fuzzy friends! I have 6 wonderful ferrets...

And here is my cat, Mia, all of her pics shrunk and I haven't had a time to try to blow them back up yet...

Well, that's my current collection!

Juvenile Okeetee corn snake
Spotted python hatchling
2 year old male Leopard gecko
Bunnies (2 year old Castor Rex and 8 year old mixed breed)
3.5 year old female Golden Retriever (whom I show in conformation.. another one of my hobbies)

As for the rodents, after 'retiring' myself from breeding (I last bred Peruvian guinea pigs) I have a 2.5 year old female black hooded rat, and a 3 year old male Burmese gerbil (both of which had sibling cagemates that have passed on).

Enjoyed looking at everyone's pictures!

Besides four Corns I have an Eastern King, Greyband King, Desert King (splendida), Trans Peco Ratsnake, and soon to be added to my collection, a Bairdi Ratsnake and Mexican Black king. Had a Bairdi once before and without a doubt one of my favorite snakes.
Also have two dogs, a boxer and a schipperkee, and one cat.
Here's a pic of my 03 Trans Peco Rat.

So my signature is pretty much accurate. Plus I have a foster kitty right now. I am posting a pic of one of our newest additions. Sorry for the terrible quality but I took it last night with my new camera phone.

The worst thing is when my cat decided to wake me up by having her kittens in my bed, my first thought was "yep, the boa could totally eat them." Not that I would ever do it of course but you try waking up wet with cat goo.
