Hey man,
It really depends on what kind of HL you have to ensure proper care. with the exception of possibly the Short-Horned lizards, Phrynosoma douglassi, and Phrynosoma hernadezi, heat is a major factor to an HLs survival in captivity. It helps them digest their food. Also, the experts on this forum say you should feed an HL about a 90% ant diet. Not all ants work, as these guys can be picky. If I'm not mistaken, I think all the ants from the genus pogonamyrmex will work. You can gather them near your home, or order them from people like Cable Hogue. Look down the forum for pictures of ants that are accepted by many HLs. Natural sunlight is best also. If you can, HLs benefit greatly in my experience, from living outdoors when weather permits. Their colors are more spectacular, they eat more readily, and I have just had loads more success than with keeping them indoors. Not to say that its not possible mind you. It is also said that HLs should not be mixed with other lizard species, as a stress reducer, but that is probably still up to debate. As you might imagine, they also need some sort of burying medium, like play sand. or sand form where the HL was found also would work. Add some rocks for them to bask on, and a place for them to retreat from the heat, and you could have a friend for some time. but this is just my opinion, and my best results. There are some guys on this forum who really know their stuff, so ask them too. Good luck with your lizard,
-Phil
