"incubated for females"

shion Jun 04, 2004 04:29 AM

"We currently have 9 c.b. baby sulcattas incubated for female at 91 degrees."

I know there have been some studies on this but has this been proven to be true yet?

The only published controlled studies that I have been able to come up with is on Hermans and Greeks and that was published way back when. All the speculation you see is pretty much based on that one study and anecdotatal observations.

I have a 4 year old hermanns tortoise that was incubated to be female. "She" even has 4 scutes instead of 5, a common side effect at high temp incubation. This spring I discovered that she's a male. There are no guarantees that your sulcatas will be females, only a higher probability.

Biology is exactly why statistics was created... it is because there are no certainties only probabilities.
