Snow corn X black king hybrids, F2 generation

Dwight Good Jun 18, 2003 03:27 PM

Some of you may remember I crossed a snow corn with a black king (L. g. nigra) in 2000. I raised up a female F1 and crossed her back to her father (a snow corn) this season. The clutch recently hatched and here are the results:

3 normals
4 amels (one is pictured)
2 anerys
3 snows

Backcrossing to the snow corn was preferable to breeding the female to another F1, since I prefer the heavy corn influence in the offspring. Also the snow's genetic make up allowed for a more varied mix color wise. An F1 male would have produced mostly normals when bred to the F1 female. However, my curiousity has now been piqued and I will be raising up a male F1 (I also did the snow corn X black king cross this year) to breed to the adult female F1 in a few years. That should result in less color morphs but more variation amongst the offspring. Some should end up more king like which will be interesting.

..at least that was my first response. That is way nicer than I thought they would come out.
Dwight that is awesome. That should show the anti-hybrid folks! Who would have thought that cross would come out looking that nice. Nice work Dwight!

Who cares about those guys anyways? I certainly don't care what they think of me or my hybrids. Live and let live. (or is it live and let die?) LOL.

Thanks for the compliments RW! What do you have in the frankenbator this year?

...closet. Waa ahahahaha!

As far as hybrids and crosses I am expecting the following:

*Whitesided Blackratsnakes X Gopher (pitophus)
*Whitesided Everglades X amel corns
*Amel Corndurans (25%honduran x 75% amel corn)
*Amel Cornduran X Jurassic (50% Honduran 25% corn and 25% Lemon king)
*San Felipe Ghost Rosy X Mex. rosy (not really a hybrid but nice)
*Hypo brooksi x Eastern Bumblebee king (getula cross)
*amel flame floridana x Eastern Bumblebee king (getula cross)

..and a few (hopeful) suprises that I will post if they come to fruitiion!

Next year will be more interestin!

The snake is very pretty. I have a question. Do half breed kingsnakes eat other snakes?

Ya know, I certainly don't know the answer to that question! My F1 corn/king cross is half king and she doesn't show any interest in other snakes. But then again the only time she is around another snake is at the height of ovulation... lol. There may just be other things on her mind at that time.

I don't keep hatchlings together either, so I can't help answer your question. As soon as they crawl out of the egg they go into separate cages. I do this with all my snakes, not just my kings, halfbreeds, or other snakes.

I do know that my speckled kings would eat each other if I didn't intervene! I have a small female (around 30" and a larger male (almost 4') and when I put the female into his cage to try and breed them, he lashed out and bit her on the neck and then started constricting her. She constricted back but it was a losing battle. At first I thought it might have been a copulatory grasp but nope... no way. This guy was going to make a meal out of her! Needless to say it will be next year before I get any speckled king eggs.
