40 gallon tank...

janome Jun 04, 2004 06:37 AM

I have a python in a 40 gallon breeder size tank. I'm going to get her a bigger house so was thinking of putting a divider in the 40 gallon to make 2 sections so I could put my 2 corns in it.
Does anyone see a broblem with this as far as the snakes are concerned? Will they co-exist or just want to get at each other all the time? I think they are male and a female but never had them sexed to be sure. Just go by what people have told me about how to sex snakes by looking at them.
I know keeping 2 snakes in one cage isn't a good idea but since this will have a divider (probably a piece of glass) would that be ok. I don't want to get rid of the 40 gallon tank so wanted to make use of it somehow and still make room for more snakes. :0)

The biggest problem I see is makeing the seal at the top actually snake proof. Depending on the design of the tank that can be a pain.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

I love 40 breeders and use them for both snakes and Leos. I agree with the previous response that finding a way to seal the top of the divider would be a challenge. Is it a critter cage with sliding screen top? If it's an actual tank with separate lid it would be easier to divide. I divided my 55 gallon tanks when I had baby beardies. I attached some of that tank backer to the divider so they could not see each other, you might want to consider attaching something to block their sight. Not sure if seeing each other would or would not cause stress.

You can do a really nice setup in a 40, I think it's a nice sized tank for one adult. I say go ahead and spoil your snakes and buy a second tank and give each his own, then you won't have to worry about having to buy a new tank down the road when they grow up!

This is my Rat Snake's 40 Breeder...

Here is Mysty's 40 Breeder, I still need to get her some plants to spruce it up a bit...

I also house my Sand Boa in a 40 Breeder, he's less than 2 feet long but very active and makes good use of the extra space.

>>I have a 55 gallon tank divided.
It works just fine.
There has never been any sign that they have even the slightest idea that they are next door neighbors...lol
