Just curious - any herpers in the SCA?...

Thamnophile Jun 04, 2004 08:44 AM

My SCAdian friends think my reptiles are a little too wierd, and my herper friends think my dressing as an Iron Age Celt is a little too wierd...LOL.... Am I the only one?

Anybody else have "wierd" combinations of hobbies?

Oh, the things you think about when you are sleep deprived!

The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism - people trying to re-create Renaissance, Medieval and earlier time periods.... events are kind of like going to a Renaissance festival, but there are no "tourists" - everyone there must dress the part.

If you're into fencing, check out www.sca.org - fighting, fencing, medieval archery and siege weapons play a large part of most events.

My favorite annual event, and a really cool website is www.pennsic.net. The Pennsic War takes place north of Pittsburgh PA every August for 2 weeks - camping, huge battles, merchants, classes, and nightly carousing, often augmented by homemade beer, wine, and mead. People come from all over the world.

Anyways, cool - I am an artist, and collect fossils, too. What types of fossils do you collect?

Love the Rennisance festivals. We have a club that duels in that fashion here.

I collect locally Pleist. material (we had mammoths, mastodons and sabre tooths (rare)here.

I do have some sabrecats from the Dakotas and other skulls from China (not the fake stufF).

Besides collecting I do my own cleaning and restoration.

I have a deep interest in early (Silurian-Devonian) fish and amphibs, well as pre-dinosaur repiles. I also have about 80 sp. of trilobites and several dozen ammonites.

Plus...I have a fossil snake vertabre that would scare the average herper (the snake was estimated at over 40 ft,)

Contact me off forum and I will send you some pixs.

What do you have?

I am not in the SCA, I tend to favor wearing elf ears too much. I used to be a member of NERO to get my LARP fix.

I do however attend Renn Faires in the NY/NJ/Conn area regularly, in full [period] garb.

My girlfriend is a seamstress, musician, historian, and special education teacher.

I am an amateur digital photographer, guitarist, and a diesel automotive freak.
