A new find while herping...

snakeguy88 Jun 04, 2004 09:49 AM

Hadn't seen one of these before. It is a bronze frog I figure from process of elimination (and since I lost my field guides apparently). From the size when I lifted the board, I figured it was just a leopard frog as I saw it jump off. But when in hand, I saw it quite obviously wasn't. It was a very pretty frog, took some pics, and then put him back under the board he was under near a swamp north of Houston. Sorry about the quality of the pic. I got a new scanner for college, so this old one is history.

Nice pic Andy,

Just been back in Sugar Land for last 2 weeks as well as last summer. All the anurans I ever saw were bullfrogs (everywhere) and Texas toads...but then again, I wasn't looking very hard.

You sure they weren't gulf coast toads? They are by far the most common toad in the area.

And the sign says "No long hair freaky people need not apply." So I put my hair under my hat and I went in to ask him why. He said you look like a fine outstanding young man I think you'll do. So I took off my hat I said "Imagine that Huh Me working for you."

My mistake..yea, definitely Gulf Coast. We have a fountain pool in our backyard and I'm sure one day my neighbors will come yelling about the loud "waaahhhhhhhhs" they hear every rainy night.

I know what you mean. We have a small fountain in our backyard. Seeing as it is the only permanent water source on our street, a ton of toads come over. We also used to have old shoes that were used for yard work on our back patio. The toads actually moved in to the shoes. We would consistently find toads over 3 inches in the shoes, and sometimes there would be more than 3 in each one. Pretty cool.

Wow, I never saw a Bronzer quite like that before. Almost looks like a wood frog.
