Iguana Enclosure

drunknmunky Jun 04, 2004 10:16 AM

I am looking for some specific information on plants the would be harmful or toxic to an iguana.
I have been commissioned to build a full size 4x4x6 enclosure for a green iguana and the customer has requested that it be as natural and alive as possible. He wants all live plants and all natural wood/rock climbing furniture. I have built many different vivariums for frogs, but never one for a lizard, so i do not have the proper knowledge for plant selection.
Knowing that the iguana eats only plants, i do not know how well a live planted vivarium will fare, but i am willing to give it a shot. Please help me out answering these specific questions.

#1 What plants are toxic or harmful to iganans that i should avoid completely
#2 What (if any) plants will an iguana not eat if placed in the vivarium with him. (look decent but will not be consumed)
#3 What is the best substrate (planting material) that will not bother the animal, but provide good plant growth potential. (this will not necessarilly be the bedding in the cage, just in the planted sections)

Thank you all very much!

Oleander, tomato greens, four-o'clock, rhubarb, and too many more to name here. Hibiscus and tropical ficus, spider plant, and christmas cactus are a few plants that are ok for igs to eat. Go to this site to get some listings both good and bad:

Plastic ones. Certain ones can stand up under an iguana's abuse, and they only need to be watered twice a year, outside, to get rid of the dust. If you ever decide to get plastic plants, be aware that your ig will eat any part that he can pull off.

If you do decide to let your ig decimate a plant, keep it in it's pot and cover the dirt with hardware cloth. Igs will eat dirt (for reasons that I'm not aware of).
