gpoop Jun 04, 2004 11:00 AM

Hi, would a cage that is 20 inches tall and 16 inches wide be big enough for an adult? It's an all screen cage.thanks.

You didn't mention which Rhacodactylus species or the depth of the cage.

The depth is 16 inches and it's a normal one I guess, it doesn't say on the webpage at lllreptile.

It doesn't say what species it is. All it says is "adult male crested gecko 6-7 inches". Go to lllreptile's site then tell me if my cage is big enough.Thanks.

Crested Geckos are Rhacodactylus ciliatus. You definitely need to do some reading on these geckos before you buy one.

Yes, that cage will be fine for one adult male.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Rhacodactylus geckos. Your cage would be a good size for a crested. I use all screen cages and love them. Some people worry about maintaining proper humidity levels in screen. If you the cage will be in a very dry room, you may want to mist the cage once or twice a day, and always make sure that fresh water is available.

I am a little shocked by the rude posts in this thread. I think it is important to remember that we were all beginners in this hobby at some point in the past. If you have other questions please post them and I will try to answer.

"rude" may have been too strong of a word. How about "less than helpful".

Jake,

I wasn't going to say anything, but I have to admit that laughing at him was a bit much...especially considering you were asking some pretty basic questions yourself just two months ago. As a matter of fact, up until 3-4 years ago, I'd never even heard of a Crested Gecko, much less knew what their scientific name was.

You have to remember, with a species like Cresteds, there's going to be a lot of people that are either new to Crested Geckos or new to reptiles in general. I say that because they're commonly thought of as a perfect beginner gecko (which is very true) and because with them being relatively new to the herp scene, there isn't a lot of info out there on the net.

Heck, 10 years ago they were extinct, if the story I heard it correct!

(odd, I own 2 species that were at one point considered extinct, the other is a grass parakeet)

I see your point, But anyone who says "doesn't say what species it is" and then in the SAME post gives a quote that SAYS what species it is deserves to be laughed at IMO. It also shows they have no clue whatsoever how to care for that animal.

Mike,

Considering I was one of the only two people that responded, I hope you weren't alluding to me as being rude or less than helpful, as you later put it. I simply answered the question (pertaining to the size of the cage) and recommended that he do some reading, which I consider sound advice.

I guess I could've referred him directly to my website, which I've spent countless hours on in the name of being helpful, but of course then it would only look like a shameless plug.

Anthony,
I often times pay more attention to what is posted than who is posting. You have been a HUGE contributor to this forum for the past few monthes and I applaud that. Your website is also amazing. I am always in awe of people with the skill and patience to create on the web. I apoligize. My comment was more offensive than intended.

I just don't want new people to be discouraged. I have recently decided to be more active on this forum. I think about all the people that helped me when I got started back when computers where the size of a Datsun (antiquated car reference intended), and all the nice people along the way, and I finally realized that a forum like this is a great way repay the good will. Not only that, but it would nice to see a little more flavor on this forum again. A couple of years ago there was quite a bit of healthy debate and colorful discourse. I have to lurk on the ball python forum to read posts about market speculation, and other fanciful things.

I also apoligize for this post, and it's rambly probably incoherent nature. I spent 3 hours at the eye doctor today, and then my 2 year son flushed the platic "pee" protector from his potty chair down the toilet. Plumbing and optometry and currently my least two favorite things in the world, and I will leave it at that.

That i get to grow up in an age where computers are the size of a small aquarium. I like the datsun reference, very funny.
