weird beardie water antics. what are they doing???

gavinclews Jun 04, 2004 04:10 PM

i have 2 female beardies and a male. earlier i got my water sprayer out as normal, spayed them on their backs and their heads the same as i normally do. This is when things started to go a bit strange. The two females ran over to the water bowl that i keep in their viv, got in and spent about fifteen minutes diving around rubbing their heads in the water and scratching and just generally being wierd. Is this normal because they have never done this before and with them both doing it at the same time i thought it might just be something that they do. Any explanations would be greatfully recieved. thanx

you posted a couple of days ago about mites yeah?

sounds to me like the mites are irritating them and they're trying to scratch them off. or else they could just be trying to dislodge a shed - but if both of them are doing it at the same time its probably the mites digging in. how's the treatment going?

This is a normal dragon thing actually. Dragons, especially females and young ones, have a water dance that they do. I have some females that will try and rub themselves on every inch of a wet rock. If I give them a bath they do this sliding and turning dance where they stop and splash water on their backs and do this thing that looks like a dog scratching its ear. It is almost ritualistic sometimes.

It could mean a shed, most dragons will take advantage of being misted to rub their itchy old skin.

Water does funny things to these desert creatures. Do not worry about it. The water dance is fine.

Yes mine run and slide and squirm on the wet cage floor or rocks, but also if you did have mites or have this will cause them to seek water to soak in to relieve themselves

Some of my females do the "water dance" as well. My adopted female sissy will do the exact same thing, looks like a dog scratching behind their ears. i actually took a video of it. If i could find out how to host it i would show you.
