Captive Racer was gravid

WeekendHerper Jun 04, 2004 04:28 PM

I caught this 40"+ racer a few weeks ago and have kept him (her actually) for observation. Today to my suprise, I found her laying eggs, 15 in all. I've got them incubating now.

For those of you who might remember, last summer I found a wild clutch of 32 racer eggs in July and hatched them. I guess I'm at it again this summer.

Is the Garter snake intended to be a feeder? If not you might need to get him/her a home of its own fore your Racer gets over her post partum depression...

Good luck with the eggs!

Yes it was intended as a feeder
I was a little nervous with the garter in there while the racer was laying, but at that point I didn't want to disturb her.

My concern would be damage to the eggs if that garter had crawled on them while she was laying and they were still soft. Best to keep a gravid snake to it's self (when posssible). Nice garter!

Yeah, that garter, shouldn't be a feeder, if you had to sell them, you'd probably get more for the garter. Good luck with eggs.
