Snapper behavior

ZooHerp Jun 18, 2003 04:04 PM

About a week ago I found a snapper in the park I work at. He had buryed himself head first in some sand on the edge of a creek. A couple days later I found him digging a hole in the ground pretty far from the creek right in the middle of an open grass field. He had one of his back legs in the hole which was about four inches deep and two inches wide. I figured it was lying eggs but I came back three days later and there were no eggs. Just thought I'd throw my observations out there mabye someone has a reason for all this digging.

Sometimes they start and hit a rock or other object that prevents digging further. These are called test nests. Also you mave have frightened the gal into moving back to the water until she could safely pick a new nest site away from predators(you).
