Tegu nails (or are they claws?)

dubumb Jun 04, 2004 07:36 PM

My tegu's nails (or claws? i donno what they have..) Have gotten considerably sharper since i got 'em. Now whenever I handle him i get around 3 punctures in my skin lol... I was wondering if they are trimmable? If this would harm them in anyway though i dont even wanna consider it... What do you think?

lol! I know what you mean. My arms look like I got in a fight with a cat, and lost! The scratches aren't deep, but they sure do look like I 've been shredded.

You can trim their nails, using the little nail clippers they have for cats and birds; just the tips, though. There is a vein that runs down the nail, and if you cut that, they bleed. You can get some of the styptic powder that is used on cats and dogs and birds to stop the bleeding if you do cut too deep, but it's better to just clip the very tip. Also, if you give them a rock to climb on, it helps somewhat to keep the sharp tips down.

It is also helpful to have help. One person to hold the tegu, and one to do the clipping. They tend not to want to stay still for a pedicure.
