Potty Training, how do you do it?

jrbl Jun 04, 2004 08:53 PM

Hi,
I have been wanting to try potty training, but I don't know where to start. I mostly keep them in their cage, but it seem whenever I bring them out, I get urinated on by my female. She alwas seems to do it, and I don't know why. Can I try to train them in one corner of the cage and then try outside later/? I would like them to be free roamer in the future, but I don't want them out if they are going to go to the bathroom everywhere, especially on me. Thanks, jrbl

Hello.
I'm not an expert, but this could help you. The best way to potty-train your ig is taking him/her every mourning to the tub for 15-20 minutes. The water level should be under his/her chest, and the water must be warm. I do this every mourning to Fulton, and he poops very well. However, it could take some time for your ig to realize that "water" means "poop time". You can also visit www.anapsid.org/iguana/index.html . There's a lot of information about igs.

I did the same thing as Thomas did. Be very consistant. My igs will now head towards the bathroom on their own when they have to go. Very rarely is there a mishap.

Even when we are away from home, once he has gone potty in the tub where we are a few times, he will head for it when he needs to go. They are so smart!

Green Guy does this too. When I get up in the morning the first thing I do is fill the tub. He sleeps with me, and when he hears the water running (and sometimes even before I start the water) he waddles into the bathroom on his own, and often climbs into the tub on his own. He soaks for a while, then poops and gets himself out. While he is soaking, I clean his house and make his breakfast. When he gets out of the tub, he waddles back into his house to eat. The process is reversed in the evenings; he gets dinner first and then a bath before bedtime. It never ceases to amaze me how good he is and how much he enjoys his routine!

It did take a little while though. Be consistent and try to stick pretty much to the same time of day. Don't expect too much too soon, and after a while your ig will get the idea. Always clean and disinfect your tub after your ig poops; I drain the tub and then refill it with hot water and a little bleach. If it needs further cleaning, I use Comet and then rinse it VERY well with the showerhead. I do this right after he poops so the tub has plenty of time to dry before his next bath. Good luck!

That is the key word, "routine". Igs like this too!
I have a shower head that comes off for easy cleaning and also get their food together while they are bathing. Works out great!
