More ? on cross-breeding

IDunnoEither Jun 04, 2004 09:36 PM

I'm sure we'll find that Uros can be cross-bred... at least some of them.

I'd like to breed my uro with either my bearded or my water dragon. It looks like the parts will fit but right now they are pretty pissed at each other. How long should I wait to see if they breed or kill each other?

well if you find them dead, you obviously waited too long, then you dont need to worry about breeding.
silly answer to a silly question.
however I think you have something more interesting to say, this is why aim replying.

(The 'dead' part was a joke of course.) I just think it would be interesting to see which species within the Uro genus could breed. I also think it would be interesting to find a lizard within the Agamidae family that the uro could breed with. Is that possible? I mean imaging a Uro/Horny Devil cross or one of the Agamas. I'll probably avoid the Water Dragons. Then I'd have a lizard that always wanted to be in/near water but couldn't stand the humidity once he got there .
OMG... no... save the species. I know lots of folks think it would be violating the rules of Life, the Universe, and Everything to breed cross-species much less what I'm talking about. But if it can be done, someone will do it eventually so what the he@#.

The moment we decided to keep wild animals as captives against ther will, we are in violation, from ther on we try to give ourself as many reasons as possible to justify our greed, its for species survival! its to stop the commerce of importation! its a rescue! the trueth is regardless of the resones we keep animals, the only tru justification is enjoyment, it whod be hipocrite to condem the hybridization of species when ultimatly animal domestication is a processus of genitique manipulation, eventually animals are crossed to bring out desired traits like temperament, size, morphology as in dogs, however with reptiles we also have the entier spectrum of colors to enjoy, aim presently trying to cross lace monitor to jobiensis because of size coloration and variability. maybe in 100 generation someone will out-cross them to something more drab looking and says its more natural?
Take for example leopard geckos, every body loved them the way nature made them to be, however captive breeding has yeld many new color morphs, now many pepoles are only interested in new morph and dont keep the regulars anymore, its normal as anything produced for our enjoyment will be made to satisfy our demends, dosent matter what I think about this, it simply will not change the evolution of captive produced reptiles.

In keeping wild animals, I agree, we're violating something, at least. Making a cross isn't going to hurt anyone, or cause millions of uros to be ripped out of the wild burrow.
But, I'm very skeptical of whether or not a uro would breed with another lizard. In my opinion, keeping uros with anything else besides another uro is bad buisness. At the same time, there is a lot to be considered if you go ahead. If they brumate at different times, they will not breed. If there is a different number of chromosomes, they will not breed. If one has a different courtship ritual, they will not breed. Look into that first. I don't know much about beardie breeding or chromosomal make up, so I can't be of much use there.

to cross-breed them even though they are in the same family. Humans belong to the same family as chimpanzees and gorillas but that doesn't mean that the genes will match up closely enough to produce viable offspring. The species is about the only thing that may allow cross-breeding. For example, a wolf (Canis lupus) can be bred to a dog (Canis familiaris) to get a dog-wolf hybrid but that is because they are so closely related (the first dogs were probably domesticated wolves) they can cross-breed. Uromastyx are in a class of their own and since the name of the species changes (ie. Uromastyx maliensis, Uromastyx geyri, Uromastyx ancanthinus (sp.?) etc.) it might be possible to cross-breed them but not with other animals whose family names are different (agamids, etc.)

This is just my opinion of course, feel free to comment.

i've been contemplating crossbreeding of species for quite awhile.

i have looked around and contyacted many breeders who hybridize snakes and a few who cross breed lizards. 90% of the cross bred animals are snakes because their habits are so similar and can be confused be senting to cause or induce breeding. where as lizards breed by site and just simply hormones (i think) but i do know they go more be site.

if they were closely related like beardies and lawsons dragons or a mali and a morrocan then you have a good chance because they will look very similar and when they come out of brumation in the spring may very well breed.

i have spoken with Doug Dix about cross breeding and i found out that he too is trying to cross some to gain more studry captive pets, also, ones with more color.

i will be attemping to cross some as soon as i decide wht ones.

i'm thinking a mali and a morrocan to hopefully get the blacks into the morrocan pattern. or whatever.

just my thoughts...hopefully you can understand all of it
