I house my leos in 28q. sweater box rack system. It seems it would be easiest to skip substate all together and spot clean and wash them out in the sink every few days. Any thoughts?

That is a bad idea because the heat pad on the bottom of the tank would be too hot with no other heat conducting material in between. If you aren't looking for anything in particular just use simple ole paper towels. Not using a substrate is bad, the geckos have little to no traction on glass also.
My heat is ajustable and sweater boxes are not glass. I hear you on the traction none the less but have tried this out and they have no trouble. I am housing my adults in this manner and have not had a problem yet. I will continue to use paper towels for the hatchlings mostly for traction. Dem little crickets is fast.. Any other reasons going with no subtrate? I figure peolpe use tile. If you can control temps, what's the difference. I have not been housing them this way for long so I don't know the long term hazards if any.

I don't believe there are actually any hazards...though traction and heating may be concerns...having a heat pad directly under the plastic with no substrate above wont' really allow for much of a heat gradient...whereas if you place tile above the heat will spread a bit more and create a better gradient. Also, if you get vinyl tile, you can cut it to fit, and it has good traction (assuming you don't get a glossy or smooth finish...I have stone like textured tiles). Tiles are VERY easy to clean...you can spot clean, and you can also simply remove them for cleaning.

-ignorance is not to be punished when one is trying to gain knowledge...what scares me is the vast number of people who, when given the information to gain knowledge, choose to ignore it.
Could you maybe rough up the surface w/ some sand paper to give them better traction?

Sure, that might help but honestly adults seem to be able to get around fine as well as catch food. I don't think it is a issue. I still would like to hear any other health issues so keep trowing opions everyone.
