beardie poop...

ericchen Jun 04, 2004 10:07 PM

looking forward to getting my new baby beardie over the summer...i have a few question....

im pretty sure that im gonna use shelf liner....but does beardie poo come in the form of dry urates *the white stuff on the tip of the poo* or is it a mess...and also is powersun cost effective as opposed to getting a reptisun and basking light..*for a 30 gallon, or maybe powersun is to powerful haha*...and how often do i have to change powersun bulbs..i know they last a while but UVB ratings decrease rapidly...looked on beautifuldragons.com page...*thanks whoever hosts that site..great info*...and lastly can u tell me any brand of salads that come prepared that have the vital staple greens for beardies as i am probably as knowledgable as a vegetable about greens....

Beardie poo does have urates, but it's also smelly and messy. I think it also depends on what you feed them though. I noticed a worse smell with crickets and more of a mess with silkies. I have used sand and it tends to absorb odors, but since I switched to shelf liner clean up is much easier. I have never used a powersun but I heard they do not produce much heat and you may have to buy a basking bulb anyway. Halogen bulbs are cheap and produce lots of heat. This is what I use along with a reptisun 5.0. As for green I buy "Dole" spring mix, collard greens, and cilantro. I also pick up fruits or veggies to mix in for variety. Good luck with your new baby beardie!!

Wow I love the fact that you are doing research before you buy your beardy! The urates can be kind of chalky but overall the feces are soft and formed if you dragon is healthy. I think that a thirty gallon tank is going to be to small for a 100 watt Powersun. On the other hand the tank might be a little big for your baby beardie. He is going to get a lot of excercise in that tank. MVBs last about 6-8 months but most lose much of their ability to put out high levels of UVB rather quickly. Currently Powersun is the best MVB according to www.Beautifuldragons.com. As far as a mix for your baby BD I use The Country mix that I find at Ralphs here in CALI it has Collard greens, Mustard greens, and Turnip greens. I use that as a staple and for the babies I throw in yellow squash b/c of its ability to retain water. always make sure to remove any large veins from the leaves and cut the greens down to a manageable size. If you are going to purchase a dragon I would suggest that you buy from a quality breeder who has the animal lineage. Please do not buy from a pet store most do not take care of the animals and you will be short changing yourself. There are plenty of good breeders in this forum including me and I would bet they are all willing to set you up with a nice baby dragon
Thanks,
Randy

having kept a few herps in my time ive noticed the quality of store bought and breeder bought herps...but is it just me or is petco starting to shape up a bit?...i mailed them a while before about their poor leopard conditions *i love leopards but want something to love me back ...only 2 out of my 5 even allow me to get close..hehe*...and they immediately stopped using the calci sand and went to very fine "reptile sand" that didn't contain CaCO3 *limestone/calcium carbonate* which basically acts as a neutralizing base for stomach acids which contributes to most of the impactions...so anyone using sand is fine JUST DON'T USE VITA/CALCI sands...and after my numerous emails they heated up the enclosures to satisfactory levels...still trying to get them to get a freaking humid box for them but they say "oh we spray them daily..blah blah"....but i guess i did my best...i really want my beardie..and have found a local breeder that provides lineage and other good stuff...even willing to sell me a reptisun for 15 bux!..they are the owners of ikexotics.com i believe...ive talked to the breeder well before even considering a beardie and i found that they are extremely social and tolerate handling MUCH better than leopards....haha my mom also liked the idea that beardies actually come out to bask...unlike leopards and their "hide in the hide" nature...THANKS FOR THE INFO GUYS! im also in cali so that ralphs reference was a big bonus...now...i have compiled my own checklist..tell me what is extraneous and what is a must..thanks:
*30-40 gallon *going to seperate it when i get my baby so it can identify food items readily and easily
*UVB light strip and Basking light/Powersun
*Shelf liner
*grapevine...
*rocks...
*timer...
*light fixtures
*crix
*silkies
*Country Mix..believe?
OH OH MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION...do they poop on the same place?..or do they poop randomly and dropem all over the place?
