milk and rat together?

crtoon83 Jun 04, 2004 11:52 PM

I am new to snake keeping, and I ordered a licorice stick black rat snake. She's just over 18 inches long. Today in the pet store, I saw a beautiful plebian (sp) milk snake, around the same size, for $35. There were 5 or so, and I asked her if he could live fine with a lic stick, she wasnt sure so shes holding him...but would they get along? or would this be utter doom for both? Right now I would have them in a 29 gallon tank, however within a month or two they would be living in a 75 gallon. I would of course have a total of 4 hiding spots, 2 on teh warm and 2 on the cool sides....I'm just wondering how they'd get along. Please let me know. -Chris

I mean I'd like to have both, I really like the markings of both, but I don't want them to be miserable together, and I can't have two tanks.

I never had a pueblan but agree with you great looking. Every thing I have read on milksnakes tells me they eat other snakes so sounds risky.
Why dont you seperate the tank into two they sell screen seperators think at www.petwarehouse.com but sure other places carry them to.
A 75 gallon is big and can easily be partitioned into 2. Than add branches, etc so they can use the height to.

not a good idea to keep two snakes together. i also have read milks will eat other snakes so best keep them seperate. that is a good idea to divide the 75 gallon into 2 sections that way you can have both snakes in one cage with out them coming into contact with each other. only problem i see is how to heat both sides and still have a cool side. maybe have under tank heaters on both ends and make the middle the cool end.
just a thought..i have a tangerine honduran in a 20 gallon long that is doing fine.
another thing..pueblans are VERY high strung. i was going to get one but decided i didn't want a snake i had to hold on to for dear life every time i handled it.

Pueblans are high strung when young, but do calm down and make great captives. Pueblans will eat other snakes, I learned this the hard way. Why not spend 10 bucks on 2 rubbermaid tubs, then problem solved.

ok thanks for everyone's replies. I don't have room for two seperate tanks right now...so i'll just stick with the licorice stick black rat snake. Thanks!

Here's Lola....9 months old, ~18" long
