Female redtail chucks

Herper Jun 05, 2004 12:30 AM

Just wondering if the female redtail chucks look different from other females. I'm sure they must carry the same traits as the males but how to identify them? I found a young female(?)near Phoenix last weekend. It's pretty light in color with darker bags under its eyes. I would really like to know if it could be a redtail or redback.

It will depend on where it came from.

I was visiting friends in a neighborhood just south of South Mountain Park. There are only a few blocks between the park and their house. Sadly for the chucks, there are house just about all the way around SM Park now. It won't be long before the house cats move into the park and wipe out everything. I'm pretty sure that it is a redtail juvie unless there are other color phases in the same area. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

It should be a red tail!
