two questions involving cleaning and plant decorum

justinmatthew Jun 05, 2004 09:54 AM

The bottom of my tank has cracked so I am using an old tank that I kept a python in. I want to make sure I kill any bacterias, etc. that may be lurking. I rinsed with water, than cleansed with a 10% bleach, 90% bleach solution, than rinsed, and cleansed with dishwashing soap and water. I then cleansed again. I will now allow it to soak outside in the sun all day, and then I will rinse out with warm water once again. The tank has not been used for about 6-7 mos. Is this sufficient enough to kill any thing that may be present? Anything else I should do?

I also would like to add some plants that are easily obtainble from a local nursery. What is safe that can be recommended?
Thank you,
Justin

On the post before I meant 10% bleach, 90%water. Sorry.

the tank should be clean enough now - the 10% bleach solution should kill everything.

as far as plants go, any pnay you put into the tank willbe eaten by the dragon. you can go to beautifuldragons.com for the food list which will tell you which plants are ok for dragons to eat.

if you want to get plants from a garden store, bear in mind you have to 'quarantine' the plant for about 6 weeks to let all the chemicals used to wash out.

i was thinking it might be a good idea to grow my own kale or romaine organically, then place them in the tank - constant supply of fresh salad!

odds are your BD will eat anything that grows down to the root. Its a nice thought but I dont know anyone who has succeded unless you have a really big outdoor enclosure.

as for cleaning, make sure the bleach smell is gone or the fumes can kill your BD.

Also don't forget that a plant will reqiure a VERY humid environment. Your dragons should not be kept in a high humidity environment for long periods of time. They would be more susceptible to respiratory infections and fungal growth.

Think of a warm and moist environmet that has a constant supply of bacteria (dragosn poop). Sounds like a recipie for disaster.

In a large outside enclosure this might be possible, but in a small indoor tank it is not a healthy idea.
