Male Leo has swelling in hemipenes area?????

clayc Jun 05, 2004 02:49 PM

Ive never seen anything like it before. One of my male Leos has swelling in his hemipenes area. He still eats and defecates normally, but there is a large swelling down there!! There is also a red spot right in the middle of it which looks like it could be a wound.

Im taking him to the Vet, but does anyone have any idea what this might be? He is being breed, as he has for the last couple of years, with out problem.

thanks,

Clay

An infection maybe? It's good that you're taking him to the vet. If it were on another part of the body, I would try applying some triple antiobiotic cream (like Neosporin) but I know some males have a habit of licking down there, plus it's a better idea to determine what the problem is first. You probably already know this, but make sure he's kept on paper towels until the swelling heals.

Well, my male is all better now, more or less. Apparently while breeding the female had bite him in the groin area leaving a wound, which while I was gone on business became infected. My Mom (the Vet) started him on antibiotics, and removed the infection from the area. He should be fine in a couple of weeks.

Thanks!!
