Ideas on website design?

obz Jun 05, 2004 04:55 PM

It's not like I will be producing anything anytime soon, but since I bought server space for my artwork's web site, I figured I would make a boa one as well. Once it goes up it will probably just have photos of my collection, a care sheet, and anything else i can think of that a website that is'nt selliung anything should have.

This is just a mock up, not an actual working web page, so no links work, and there is no domain setup yet. Just playing with the design.. what do you guys think? (ANY ideas and critiques are WELCOME. I make my living as an artist so I'm very acustomed to taking critisism in a constructive way)

for several reasons... one, i could never do anything that amazing if i applied myself for weeks...
second, b/c you purchased that aberrant imported guyana from pete. i was at his store today and saw your name on it... GREAT choice bro... definitely the better of the two
and third, just b/c i like giving you a hard time! lol
seriously... friggin sweet man... i like that look!

Abberant? You mean this guy?

I have high hopes for him...he just looks killer from the photos!

you have no idea!
i know why you bought him... his tail... but once you see his side ovoids, the side stripes, and the sides and underside of the tail, you'll be even happier! (actually, i don't know the sex so i'm guessing male?)
he's definitely killer. i was going to buy him today but you beat me to the punch.
so, i bought a SMOKING male to go w/ Rose. I think (totally speculation b/c he's still white) that his color will rival hers when he matures and he has a stand-out pattern (not as nice as hers, but nice) and a killer tail w/ zero speckles as of now. literally zero. he's not from the litter that everyone else is snapping up animals from, he was from a smaller litter that hasn't been advertised. btw, that litter, those are some HUGE babies man. they're as big as most properly fed yearlings. and COOOOLOOOOORFUL! only thing that turned me off was the speckling. the mother, her head is as big as my hand. she's a tank!
anyway, i'm off.
still trying to make room for your male and the male i just bought today (he's still at pete's store).
later bro, jb

Yeah i did see the medalions on him,.. THEY ARE ENOURMOUS... and pete described whats going on with his ventral, but im having trouble visualizing it...I will just have to wait and see.
Sounds very unique though!

I cant wait to see your new guy from the unadvertized litter!
(ahem... any um... you know,.. laddertails in the litter?)

Thank Dylan... Should be a while before its up and running.. i havent decided on or registered a domain yet.
Anything you would change or add for the front page?

Overall design, gallery, care sheet, list of links are among the things that still need to be put together. so once it's up and functional I'll be sure to let everyone know!

As someone who does design for a living ill weigh in on your design.

Unless you really work on the file size of the pictures, its going to be REALLY REALLY slow for anyone who isnt on broadband internet.

Also there comes the people who view websits with IMAGES disabled (which would be bad in your case as the entire site is an image)..

Other things to consider are screen resolution. You want to build the site for a MINUMUM of 800X600 screen res, if you build it for anything larger the user will have to scroll side to side and that is ANNOYING.

Looks good, but just becareful of the file sizes.

obz Jun 05, 2004 07:00 PM

THanks for that input Dan. I had thought of that and well... Here's my thoughts.

Americans are getting broad band in larger and larger numbers. No offense 56K surfers, but this site and any web work I do is made for broadband. I work in 3d for a living so I really do not like to compromise on resolution and image quality.
the more resolution the better!

As far as 800X600 enough of us are running at 1024X768 and up that it shouldnt be that big of a deal. I would probably make a duplicate site reformated smaller. Anyone with a decent computer runnig less than 1024X768 is probably doing so for vision reasons, wich is understandable.

I do plan to break it up a little so it isnt all ONE image, but again, I think its time for the internet to push forrward a bit and force people to go broadband.

As far as having images turned off, well there would still be a black background with the links on top, but... why cruise a snake site and not be able to look at them!!!
The site is about the boas, so i want to make them feel like the stars of the show

I really do appreciate the feedback though. I am not well versed in web construction yet and this will be a learning process for me. And while I do believe in efficiancy, and not making things heavier and slower than they ought to be, with a cable modem or DSL connection the page pops right up.

I do know that not everyone can afford broad band or even has it available in their area, but those numbers are getting smaller and smaller as broadband becomes more affordable and reaches more and more areas every year.

Thanks Again!

I would loose the pics on the intro page. It makes it more simple, no scrolling down, and makes for a cleaner page. The less scrolling the surfer has to do, the better. Those are killer pics, but I would leave them to a different page .

Take Care Bro, I will take good care of pogo for you!

Can ya make a live snake somewhere slithering around the homepage? How about a snake that comes 3-d towards you and welcomes you with a soundbyte of a hiss, the tongue flickers out and says welcome on the tongue and then all slowly dissapears.
Have some of our pictures later on as it gets going up in front around the edges as SOTM(snake of the month) That is none the less a cool intro page so HURRY UP AND GET IT GOING!!!!

I dabble...

As far as the animations,.. i want to keep it classy and clean. To much extrenious stuff can get in the way of a nice site.

And I've never been a fan of music or sounds on web pages as i usually have my winamp going and it interferes with the tunes!

Not bad ideas though. Thanks!

I see the artistry in the design of your prototype, and I love the boas. I envy your skill at design, and your snakes. Try to do the the same idea minimilistically. Try something like this:
Go to someone's house, connect to your site where they have a 300mhz celeron, and a monitor that only does 640x480, and a connection of 14.4kbps and a 2MB Graphics Card and ask them what they think about your site. You will have to wait for it to load, so you will probably stay for dinner. Gorgeous animals, man, WOW! When will you have offspring?

I didn't know theyt MADE a calculator that goes online!! j/k

Again, I see the point,... but really thats argueing to make roads compatible with the horse and buggy IMO, or not record in HD cause not everyone has it... this is how things get pushed forward!! Why did people get rid of their black and white TV's? Because more and more shows came out in color.

The final site WILL be liter than that image is to laod, but I dont want to cater to the lowest common denomenator.

No offspring for a quite a while. Just having fun raising them and felt like putting a page together.

Thanks!

That is gonna be one great site. That is the classiest web design Ive seen for any snake.Looks as smooth as a Lambrodini add.Nice work...Paul

ksshane Jun 06, 2004 06:49 AM

I think it looks excellent.

As far as download times. Most people have moved past the 14.4 modem, and those who havent... Well they will soon cause their cpu's are probably on its last leg.

I personally wouldnt change a thing. Its classy, easy on the eyes, and it looks so nice I would consider making it wallpaper for my desktop.

Good Job!
