I really need some advice

hevychevy427 Jun 05, 2004 06:47 PM

Hi I just recently purchased two hognose, a male yearling and a female yearling.
The person I perchased the male from said he was a slow starter and had to be fed scented pinkies in order to eat...but that she had got him to eat unscented pinkies before selling him.
Well, he has eaten nothing for me since I got him 2 weeks ago. I feed my young small snakes every 4 days so I have tried at least 4 times including today to get him to eat.
I washed the pinke, I brained the pinkie, I fed him in his box, I fed him in a delicup in his box, and I left it in with him overnight.I even had my frog that peed all over my hand while cleaning his habitat and rubbed a pinkie in that...no good.
What can I scent a pinkie with? I have E-mailed this person several times, but no answer.
Also the female does not eat either, but the friend I got her from told me this up front.
I raise kings, rats, milks, corns, and africans and have fussed and gotten food into them, but I am definately having a time with these little guys.
Thanks for any help
Nancy

I have a female that is a difficult feeder and prefers scented pinkies. when I tried using a leopard gecko that had died as a babie to scent. My hog would'nt touch the mouse. When I used a blue bellied lizard which I found dead outside to scent ( I have used anoles in the past). The lizard loved it. I have been using the same dead lizard for a year now, and the thing smells worse than any dead decayed animal carcus. I hate the smell but the snake loves it.
Some smells just stimulate the hogs scences to feed. Try scenting with a dead lizard and keep the lizard in the freezer for future uses. I like to put a cut into the dead lizard to get out more liquid smell.
If this dosent work try either goldfish scenting, tunafish water from the can, or egg white.
Let us know how this works for you. I think the lizard scenting will do good for you.
Good Luck

also wouldn't worry too much just yet....it's only been 2 weeks, your hog won't starve and hopefully you can work out something it likes, or it will get hungry enough to eat what you put in front of it. my girl refused food this week for the first time since I got her several months ago....but no big deal, I'll try her again next week, and if I have to the week after, and the week after....you get the idea. i won't scent for her as she has been eating unscented all this time, unless she's gonna die otherwise. good luck-and if you look in other posts there are people who have had good success dipping pinkies in egg white if you really need to get it eating....and it may be a bit easier than toad/lizard scenting
