Love my Womas, now how much for a blackhead?

elrojo Jun 18, 2003 05:32 PM

Wondering what a pair of blackheads would run me. And looking for specifics that differentiate them from my beloved womas. And besides the size and maturation difference, how hard (really) are they to breed? Gosh, and I swore I would never keep a non-colubrid!

to never keep a non-colubrid. Well Black Head Pythons don't make very good pythons. I consider mine much more like enormous kingsnakes than pythons, so you're staying pretty close to your oath.

As for price, they do seem to be less prolific than womas and will likely run you a bit more than womas will. However, it seems that there are a few breeders having luck with them so a pair of baby BHP's should be available and affordable in a few years.

I don't expect mine to produce babies for me for another year and a half.

I am curious to know why you don't think the Black Heads are good pythons? I bought a pair of Womas last year, and I too really only keep colubrids....but love the Womas and BHs. These snakes seem to be increasing in popularity and I don't often hear anything negative. Please tell me what you were getting at. Thanks Tom

i dont think doug was putting Aspidites pythons down, he keeps them. i pretty sure he was saying they are very colubrid like. which i agree with, i dont keep any Aspidites, but then again its probably because they arent very arboreal. pretty snakes, but they arent scrubs lol

In no way did I mean that I didn't like my Black Heads. I think they are awesome animals.

They just don't look or handle like a typical python. For me, well I'm into the large colubrids, so it's all the better.

I've talked to some folks who know a lot more about it than me, and they say that there are few physical traits that qualify Black Heads as pythons. The biggie is some "hip" structures.

Anyway, I love 'em.

I don't know how long, but they looked a lot longer than most I've seen before.

The fastest way to achieve great wealth is by living more poorly for much longer.

So is it safe to assume they are similar in regards to personality? I'd love to hear from someone who breeds them how difficult it is and what the going rate is. Personally, I can't see how they are a python, judging from physical characterisitcs.

Prices for babies are probably still going to be $1000+ per animal this year. My sub-adult pair was $5K. Casey Lazik had his proven trio up for $15K.

With personalities... I have a friend who has had indigos and now has womas, I've got indigos and Black Heads. David thinks womas are much like indigos. I don't know if I'd say the same for Black Heads though. One of my black heads is totally mellow when I take it out of the cage. The other one is very defensive until she is out of the cage... then she's very mellow. I'd say their range of personality is appropriate for them to be kept by a typical snake keeper (not too bitey or shy).

Hope this helps.
