a question about morphs

Nicko Jun 06, 2004 12:47 AM

I was wondering if there was any difference in general personalities of the different morphs? I dont know if this is a stupid question, but I'm thinking of getting a butter morph and was wondered if the morph made any difference.

on an unrelated note, is there any difference between male and female corns in size or color?

thanks?

to the first question, no, in my experience there is no difference of personality in the different morphs. although it is true that every corn will have a different personality, but there are no personality traits that pertain to any certain morphs, other than feeding habits. I've noticed that some morphs, particularly the creamsicles, lean more towards lizards for food.
to the second question, there is no color difference between male and female corns but there is a size difference. Females almost alwasy end up larger than males. Males do grow faster but females will eventually outgrow the males.

As far as size goes I havn't noticed any difference untill they start breeding at that point the females seem to fall behind the males a little as they tend not to eat some of the time they are gravid and use a lot of energy in producing the eggs.
On the issue of morphs, I have heard others say and have expierienced myself that the bloodreds sometimes are Picky eaters.
My candy canes are more aggresive/nervous then most of my other corns. I believe that is a result of line breeding/inbredding to achieve the desired look.

From what I understand, males tend to be larger and heavier then females on average. I have an 02 male Butter and an 02 female amel okeetee, and my male is longer with about the same girth. In Kathy Love's Cornsnake manual on page 33, she states that males grow longer and heavier then females. I was at the Carolina Reptile Show and saw some of Kathy's adult male breeders, and I have to say, these boys were huge.
As far as different morphs and personalities, I don't think you can generalize a morph to a behavior, although Rich Z has a good article on Amber Cornsnakes on his website, saying they seem to be more fearless then other morphs. Fearless meaning more relaxed, not timid or afraid to be handled. I only have two adult corns to make an observation on size, and my male wins hands down on size. Maybe Draybar, Hoppy, or some of the others with more adult corns can give a better judge on size with male vs female then I can. Good luck.

It is hard for me to say which is larger, males or females.
I have an '01 female that is almost 5 foot and an '01 female that is a little under 4 foot.
I also have a couple of '02 males that are about the smae size as the smaller'01 female.
This may indicate that the males will surpass the females in size but for now that is just conjecture.
As far as morph and temperament goes I think it just depends on the snake itself.
But, I will add this...Of all the corns I have had that have shown aggression it seems to have been more prevelant in the normals.
I had a pair of '02 normal hatchlings that never really did calm down for the couple of months I had them (before they escaped due to my failure to securely close their containers)
Of all the corns I have now, the only ones that ever show aggression are two of the three normals I got from Dianne.
One is just flighty and reluctant to be held and will posture as if to strike and the other will strike when I reach in to pick her up.(usually "bluff" strikes no actual teeth)She doesn't try to bite once I have her in my hands, though. She just tries to escape.

Hello;

I have many Morphs and as far as I can tell they all have their good days and bad days. I have a carmel female that is very gentle and a very nice snake as is my butter male they are both very gentle. I also have a pewter male that is about as gentle as a new born kitten. I have a bloodred female that is as honery as the devil and I also have a okeetee female that is very aggressive. I have a reverse okeetee male that is also very gentle and nice. I think the more they are handled the more gentle they are correct me if I am wrong I have soem baby bloodreds that I handle all the time and they are very nice and gentle snakes. I also have a pair of okeetee babies that I rarely handle and they are a tad more aggressive so as I can tel lif they are raised being handled they will be much more gentle when they are older. that is what I have found out.
