Help, I'm New To This (little long)

hydrata Jun 06, 2004 02:03 AM

Hey, I appreciate the help and advice in advance. Here's my story, my girlfriend saw some baby RES at the mall and continued to comment on how cute they were and her birthday was coming up and she kept asking for them, so well, being the good boyfriend I am, I got her 2 of them, but I didn't know what we were getting into. Also, I'm pretty sure the guy at the mall was illegally selling the RES since they were so young, but anyway... Now I'm starting to do some research and realize what all these turtles require for a proper home. I currently have 2 baby RES in a 5 gal tank. I know they're begging for more room. They do have a basking lamp with UVA and I know I need to get them a flourescent light with UVB. Hopefully a friend will be donating us her 25 gal tank which will hold us over until we get some money for a nice setup. Basically, my question is, can you guys give me some basic tips or how to on how to raise these turtles and setup a proper home? Or is there a good place on the internet to read a basic guideline or a good book to buy? Thanks, I need all the info I can get.

I have two babies in a 20 gallon long tank with river rock for the bottom, fake plants on one side to hide in, a cork bark basking platform with the lights set right over head on a metal screen to and the ZooMed 501 canister filter.
i feed anacharis, dandilion greens, romain and green/red leaf lettuces with a once a week treat of baby size turtle pellets, and red worms.

they are a little investment. also be aware females get HUGE , boys are smaller.
