Moving to another state 11 hours away

princesslisa88 Jun 06, 2004 08:45 AM

Hi,
I currently live in New York and have a mali uro and leopard tort. I will be moving sometime in the near future to North Carolina. The trip will be approximately 11 hours long in the car. Anyone have any advice on how to do this with a uro before? I asked the same question on the tort forum. I am worried I will get him sick from the stress and not being able to keep proper temps. Anyone have any suggestions or has ever had to do this before? Any information is appreciated.
Thanks!

hey there,
i am getting ready to drive across the country with my lizards and i was very concerned too. someone told me that they would be ok without their normal temps for a couple days. he recommended making it like perpetual nighttime for the time when i was traveling. i have very small cages, pretty much enough space to where they can turn around if they want and then i am going to lay a towel over the cages so they cannot see anything. with the lower temps and the darkness he said they would not have energy so they would remain calmer and just sleep the whole time. well that is what i am going to do. i hope it helped.

This is what I did when I moved from Iowa to Virginia and brough my savannah monitor and chinese water dragon along. I put them both in small aquariums, covered them with towels for the trip and then just avoided using the air conditioning in the car to keep it fairly warm... wasn't the most comfortable for me, but the lizards lived.

i think thay should be ok for the 11 hours. i would but them in covered containers, maybe cardboard boxes with some padding like a towel. and you can bring some heat packs along to keep the warm

I have a zookeeper friend who has lots of lizards, and when she moved we put each animal in a pillow case and then in a sturdy container. I have used this myself when transporting animals, and they do calm right down in the pillow case!
