My BRB is showing no interest in rats all of the sudden...

phiff1 Jun 06, 2004 09:11 AM

She is about 2 years old, 4ft plus and hasn't eaten since May 15th. Any suggestions on how to get her interested in food again? When should I start to worry about this?
Thanks in advance.

Can you provide a little more detail on your last few feeding attempts?

the BRB did alot of tongue-flicking but each time she has eventually lost interest and stopped. Normally she has a very strong feeding response as soon as I put a rat near her hide box.

....Live rats or dead rats? If dead rats, are they fresh killed or clean fresh frozen and thawed or skunky old nasty dirty frozen last year and thawed and reforzen twice rats? Rats offered during the day or at night? Offered with noone in the snake room or with twelve curious neighbors watching closely? Offered in the same cage that the snake ate in last time or in a new or different cage? Anything changed in the snake's environment? Offered food in front of a heating outlet in may and now the same outlet is blowing cold air conditioned air? Did the snake get bred sometime in the last few months? Could the snake have become mature recently and been cooled enough during the winter to now be ready to breed rather than eat? There are a million little details that make the difference between a snake eating or not eating. Paying attention to ALL the little details is the difference between taking good care of a snake and not taking such good care. BRBs usually eat very well. When they go off feed it is usually because of something we did to them in the past or something we are doing to them now.

rats that I bought at the New England Reptile show last month as well as rats purchased at Petco 2 weeks ago. The snake has never been bred. The room does get colder in the Winter. Nothing has changed otherwise. Maybe she is eager to breed as you mentioned.

Do you offer them at night or day? Do you let them sit for 30mins or longer? Do you feed in the cage or a seperate container? What are the temps you are feeding at?

I think you should try a live adult mouse (not from Petco/Petsmart - that's highway robbery prices!!!)

Put the food in a brown bag with the snake and leave it alone. That works fairly often.

Good luck.
