does anyone gutload thier rats

Cee4 Jun 06, 2004 10:55 AM

I usually put down whole litters at a time but I was thinking if I should feed them lots of raw veges a day or two before would that really make any nutritional difference to the snakes?
Thanks Cee

I personally consider them gutloaded by nature. Unless you are starving them ahead of time rodents have food in them at any given time.

It was just a thought..I usually feed them puppy chow and mixed cereal grains as well as the odd bits of veges and lots of pecans, I have boxes of unshelled pecans and they love those and it gives them something to do, to chew through the shells to get to the goodies..anyway thanks

Well, if they are accustomed to getting veges that is okay. I don't think it is any better than kibble and grains in my book. If they aren't used to getting veges you will have a lot of rats with diarhhea.

Most commercial rodent diets are too low in protein for breeding purposes. Rats are omnivores but when reproducing, they do have special needs. If you are breeding your rodents, give them dog food and supplement as you have been doing.

I feed dog food with with a whole grain/seed mix as a normal diet. I also supplement once or twice a week with fresh fruits and veggies. I give left over pastas and bread and anything else I think the little bugers will eat. Whenever I clean out the fridge I make a rat feast. I haven't had any trouble with loose stool. If you are going to do that you might want to check out a pet rat site to get a list of items you should not feed. You should know if you visit a pet rat forum it is not considered polite to discuss raising rodents as food for reptiles. Off the top of my head, I know too much cabage can be bad for them. Mine love fresh green and red leaf lettuce. Also avoid anything with artifical coloring because that is bad for them but can also kill your snakes. Oh, they also love frozen peas and carots, cooked fish and grapes.

BTW - I don't know how much it affects the health of my reptiles but the rats sure are healthy, and I have a garbage disposal for left overs I know my family isn't going to eat anyway.
