Naja kaouthia tips needed for new Elapid keeper

crotalus75 Jun 18, 2003 06:42 PM

I have a number of years of experience in handling vipers and pit vipers, but no experience with Elapids. Well, I decided that I needed to gain experience with these guys so I recently acquired a pair of well started hatchling Naja kaouthia and (as expected)they refuse to stay on stick and do not act like other hots that I have kept before. I would be most grateful if I could get a few tips on these guys from the experts out there.

first of congrats on your recent purchase. i started with spitters and than kaouthia. mine is a little over a year old.

first use two hooks and (depending on your patiance) you may have to do a jugling act with him. my wife (who is new to hots and loves cobras)uses a differant technique she waits and works with him patiantly till that split second when he holds still than lifts him where he needs to go. the other method is to buy a set of tongs specifically for baby hots, mighty midgets are the only ones i know of, though i've heard that midwest is designing some and just handle him that way. you should be able to start tailling at around 30 inches or so.
once you can tail him it is easier but still dangerous

best of luck
