My first venture into the "Boa world".....

Spardawolf Jun 06, 2004 07:19 PM

Hello everyone, I went to a local show today and picked up my first boa. I have experince with ratsnakes and my one BP, but this Rainbow Boa is new to me. I have a couple of newbie questions. I have her set up in a 10 gal with paper towels for substate. She has a good size waterbowl on one side and A driftwood gym with leaves on the other. I have her in my snake room which stays around 80 degrees with a 40 watt light sitting on the screen lid. I have more than half of the screen covered with a towel to hold the humidity in. The temp on the warm side is reading 82 closer to the bottom of the tank. When I first set her up she was hanging out in the tree hiding in the leaves, now she is on the floor next to her water bowl. I plan on misting at least twice a day to keep the humidity up. Our summers stay pretty humid here in PA so I might not even have to do that much right now. Please let me know what you experienced RB keepers think, and let me know if I could change anything.
BTW here is her pic. I think that she is just beautiful. Not as colorful as a brazilian, but I like the iradescent color.

Pretty snake.

I have my little BRB in a 10g temp set up. I cover the screen with glass, to keep humidity in. I use two water dishes, and in one, I put an airstone (hooked up to a small aquarium airpump--snaked the tube in through a zoo-med clip screen top) to keep the humidity up--the spray created by the airstone in a shallow dish does a pretty good job in a 10g. I usually only have to mist once in the A.M. and once in the P.M. to keep it at about 82%.

I also have two hides for her (on the warm and cool sides), and a small heat pad under one side of the tank with a thermostat regulating the temp. I also use a small 55w red bulb in a clip on fixture (about 8" above the tank) to keep her temps up in the tropical range.

I have some small fake plants for her to cruise around in and a branch for her to climb (which she likes to do occasionally!).

The whole endeavor was very easy and very cheap to set up...and should hold her nicely until she's ready for bigger digs. Just remember to keep the humidity up and don't get her too hot

Good luck with your new snake
