sudden bloat?

mikeisme Jun 06, 2004 08:06 PM

hello - I'm new to the forum, but I've been a reader for a while.

I have an argentine red tegu named Lucifer who is approximately a year and a half old. I baught him at the westchester county center reptile show on april 11, 2003, and they told me then that he was "last year's hatchling." he was approximately 15" then and is about 31" now. anyway, my issue is this: he ate 2 rat pups and some mangerine orange slices on friday, i was gone all day saturday, and when i came home sunday morning his whole midsection was huge - it looked as if he'd just eaten 5 rat pups. i put him in the bath tub to see if he'd go to the bathroom. he did, he let out a lot of gas, but the stools were lighter brown and - not liquidy - but they were deffinitely less solid than they have been. His somach went down for the most part - but not completely. i gave him some avacado and a hard-boiled egg yolk (which he ate quickly) - but after about an hour, his stomach was huge again.

could this be stomach bloat? any ideas on what i should do?

he's been pretty much a healthy lizard since i got him - other than a short period of time where he was having shedding issues. he eats wonderfully; however, hes a bit agressive about food. once i get him out of the cage he doesnt want to bite, but he squirms a lot and does his croc roll. i've never been able to get him REALLY calm like you all talk about. if he squirms a lot, he'll get tired and then he's calm, but he's not what i would call a "good family pet" at the moment. any ideas on that issue too?

thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

-Mike

P.S. i have digital pics of him - can someone tell me how to insert a pic?

Mine does that sometimes, gets big and gassy (Tegu farts?, lol). I don't know why and it seems pretty normal. Probably has to do with diet, fermenting fruit in their system??? If your tegu acts ok I wouldn't worry.
