need advice on garter snake care

perrtl Jun 06, 2004 09:31 PM

Hello -

We are now the home to what appears to be a garter snake. Can someone point me to a good source of information on needs and feeding?

The snake is primarliy black with a yellow stripe that starts at the head and end after about 2 inches turns into just a trace of a stripe. Overall the snake is about 20" (I think) and about as thick as my thumb. One eye appears to be damaged and is "white."

We live in a new townhome with a yard with even more new homes going up around us. This particular snake chose our yard as it's home a while back. Neither of the dogs have tried to hurt the snake (they pretty much ignored it) but recently the snake has been striking at them. So, to protect the snake I herded it to the neighbors yard (a couple of weeks ago). However, now that it's been displaced from our yard it's been taking trips about on the streets. We are worried that it'll end up getting killed so have temporarily placed it in a 55 gal tank with some fresh water and a towel.

We can use this tank temporarily but need to get an appropriate home as this one is planned for a home upgrade to some of our larger fish. I'm wondering what I need to get and what to feed this little snake to keep it healthy and happy.

Can anyone please point me to a good information source?

thanks!

Minnows are a good thing to try first. I can get a dozen at the bait store for less than a buck. You could try worms also. Since the tank is going to be used for something else...keep in mind you can get a pretty good size tupperware or sterilite plastic opaque box for under $10. Give it a place to hide and a large water dish. Good luck. Duffy
