Bad news on Russians

Conrad Jun 18, 2003 07:11 PM

My russians bred about 33 days ago. Strangely after they locked up the second time, they both went into shed, though I still had hope. Well, about 4 days ago, she started dropping what appear to be duds. One a day, for two days, and two on the third day. I know this is way too early. Is this probably the cause of this being their first breading? Is there any chance of there being any good eggs layed later? Thanks.

Conrad, a lot depends on variables, such as size and age. If there were only four duds, let's hope she doesn't retain any. Mature Russians can lay 18 or more eggs. Doesn't sound like it was a good mating, and probably aren't any good ones.

Russians mature slowly from my experience. They have a short growing season in the wild, and I believe are adapted to waiting until the third or fourth year before mating usually, for the first time.

I would put them away, put some weight on them this summer, and put them together in the fall when you cool them down, and see what happens. Make sure you cool them really well for a few months, like about 50*F., to insure mating will take in the spring.

Luck.....TC.

Yeah, this would have been the first year they would have been old enough to breed, but that still could be a little early. I was just hoping that it wasn't a member of my pair. Guess I'll try to get my Ridleyi this year, along with my Korros and a couple others I'm looking for, and see what I can do next season.
