Slitting Eggs

vanth Jun 06, 2004 11:17 PM

I have a clutch of eggs in the incubator right now and most of the babies started to pip today with the exception of two. although they will probably hatch soon, i am paranoid. I did have an egg not hatch last year even though it contained a seemingly flawless baby and i don't want it to happen agian. At what point do you feel it's ok to slit an egg and how does one do this? thanks

Once the first baby has pipped, it is fine to go ahead and slit all eggs. I do this on almost all of my clutches.

They should pip within a day or two of each other. I would not get in a big rush. Last year, I pipped just one egg. This egg had not pipped 2 days after the first egg pipped. Just be very careful when you cut the egg.

I agree with chondro... once the first egg pips, then just make a single slit on the top of each egg. I pinch the top of the shell and make a very shallow cut with scissors.
