MikeD, thanks for your interest in Picasso. He has become one of my favorites over the last several months.
One day early last fall we got a call from a neighboring county Animal Control department. An iguana had been sighted sunning on someone's driveway. They hadn't captured it yet but wanted us to come right away to take possession of the animal. We had Picasso home within a couple of hours. He was calm, inquisitive, and sweet from the very start. It took several baths with some gentle massage to remove the blue paint. Some specks remained for a couple of months. Strange thing is, we received a female from the same AC department a couple of weeks later that also had blue paint on her.
It was obvious that Picasso's previous care had been substandard. He has fused vertebrae in his neck which makes it impossible for him to move his head much. His cute little head bobs are very endearing.
His skin was in poor condition and his lips were pretty beat up. Part of his tail had been lost at one point but was healed and he has some pretty funky looking toes. Despite his ordeal he started eating right away and it seems he's never missed a meal since! He has some adorable chubby jowls.
Picasso has not been caged since he's been here. He doesn't care to wander much and spends most of his time in his basking spot 5 feet off the floor. He motivates pretty well on flat surfaces and can climb, but not a straight vertical. He's definately a lady's man and has attemped to breed a couple of females here. He's not an aggressive breeder however and hasn't shown seasonal aggression towards humans. He seems to get along with other lizards quite well, including my male Cyclura hybrid, Azul.
Here are a few more photos. One was taken the first day here, the others were taken this past April in Chicago. Picasso did a fine job as an educational animal at the Chicago Herp Society's Reptile Fest.
Picasso is in the center, climbing over Emma.
