Hallo to you all (a possible newbe)

steno Jun 07, 2004 01:47 PM

Hallo to everybody, I’m into the python thing and as far now I’ve only kept boids. Last week in a herp-expò I remained simply fascinated by some Crested gekos (Rachodactylus ciliatus), soon I’ve found on the web some infos to keep and breed them and now I’ve 2 basic Q’s in order to plan the beginning of a new herp-adventure.

Is it true that (and how many of you guys do it):

1) Crested gekos can be fed ONLY with baby fruit food and fresh fruits and only sparingly with live insects?
2) Do not they NEED UVB lights in order to thrive?

Thanks in advance to you all.

Steno

i feed mine CGD every day, and 3 tiny mealworms a week.

And cresteds dont need UVB at all.

from one newbie to another--I have been a snake person for a while and happened to stumble across pics of cresteds a couple months ago and was fascinated. I just got my crested a couple of weeks ago, an adult from someone who had him as part of a teaching collection but didn't want to keep him any longer, and I love him! He's getting used to being handled and observed, and since I don't have a red night light Ive found I can set m laptop's screensaver to a solid red background and put it next to his cage for a bit at night so I can watch him. he's been a lot of fun to keep so far and I had a great time putting together a cage for him too (15g tall with baked driftwood and a couple of live plants and some hides and he seems to enjoy the setup). good luck!

thank you guys, I'm just planning to order one othe books now available about the Rachdactylus genus. Your answers move me closer to acquire some crested specimens. It seems that they are one of the most popular of their genus...easier to keep and breed than the other New Cledonian geckos I guess.

Cheers
