You need to take it back and release it where you caught it.

:The HL you caught in Riverside, CA is a protected species. Several of my study sites are in the Hemet-Temecula area. You should probably read more of the forum and get an idea about the status and legalities of having horned lizards because posting this on this forum put you in a legal bind. Not to sound "upity" but this is a problem. Lester G. Milroy III

this HL is being turned over to the DFG..sorry..

snelling Jun 19, 2003 07:04 AM

Why in the world would you turn it over to fish and game instead of releasing it.. UNLESS you yourself are a trolling fish and game officer trying to get someone to bite on your for sale/trade offer. I wondered about this the first time I saw your post and now I am sure.

Hm. Unless he knows the law, releasing it would have been a more reasonable thing to do. Once an animal is taken into captivity it is unlawful to release it back into the wild unless authorized by the Fish and Game.Jeff

:Thanks Jeff. Jim has got the situation under control and we have discussed the issue. Lester G. Milroy III

Actually if you release the reptile within 30 days and it has not had contact with any other animal except for food you do not need to have authorization. Check the DNR website.

:I got in contact with Jim and we discussed the issue. He cannot legally release the HL back to the wild because he has had possession too long. My permits cover such situations and the problem is being resolved. Lester G. Milroy III

I am glad to hear that the issue has been resolved. I apologise for my skeptical attitude. However since last year when I was contacted by an individual who was obviously a F&G warden trying to purchase a garter snake which I had photographed only not captured at whitewater and posted pictures of, I am somewhat skeptical.
Lester I will be in touch regarding your recent email.
