wounds on snake plz read

atomicleo Jun 07, 2004 04:25 PM

hi

the ringneck i cought from my cats yesterday doesnt seem too hurt but i cant tell, it has a couple little scratches and i think acouple punctures that are small. also where the main small punctures are there is a lump on the other side of it. i dunno if it could be a broken rib or just swelling. ive been putting pollysporin on the wounds and was just hoping for the best. do u think wounds like this are fatal? is there anything else i can really do? (there are two of the puncture-looking wounds, one near the top of him and one near the end.) ive also been keeping him on paper towls instead of dirt. Also, should i try to feed him or wait untill he heals a litle bit?

thanks alot for any help

tom

You can go ahead and try to feed some frozen thawed worms or nightcrawlers(pending on size of the snake). Places the worm(s) in the enclosure at night(when it is likely to hunt). I don't know if it will hunt like most others because of it's wounds, and I don't know how bad the wounds look, therefore I cannot really say if it will may it or not. Also, may sure it drinks some water. Do you know what sub-species it is? If you don't, what state do you live in(or where you found it)?

im not sure what sub species it is, i live in central california. he has a orange belly with an increasingly redder end with black spots going along his belly.
can i feed it just live earthworms? or do they have to be frozen/thawed? He doesn’t seem like he’s in pain and the only way u can really see his wounds are if u take a close look. when u look u can see a small entry hole that is kinda fresh scab looking and on the opposite side there is a lump. i dunno if the lumps are broken bones or what. when i misted his cage last night he came out and was drinking the water from the side of the cage. I figured he was very thirsty so I kept on spraying a little bit at a time until he stopped drinking. i also have a water dish in there. If u think that posting a pic of the wounds could help, I can try to take some when I put some more polysporin on him tonight.
Thank you very much for youre help

Just keep up with the polysporin and try to disturb the snake as little as possible. Keep the snake on paper towels and keep it fairly dry, as when it is damp, bacteria will have a better chance of growth and therefore infecting the snake. Try to bother the snake as little as possible. Keep it warm and dark, and just wait and see. You can try to offer food, but as I said, do no disturb it often as this will increase stress and thus increase the chance of further problems developing. Just another reason why cats should be kept indoors and should not have any access to native wildlife.

And the sign says "No long hair freaky people need not apply." So I put my hair under my hat and I went in to ask him why. He said you look like a fine outstanding young man I think you'll do. So I took off my hat I said "Imagine that Huh Me working for you."

You don't have to feed it F/T worms, but live worms will put up a fight and it will take longer for the snake to eat it.
