Coccidia what can people say about it

JAG Jun 18, 2003 08:16 PM

I put a post up yesterday about my leo. Her name is ziggy and she is 5-6 months old and only weighs 6 grams. Her second fecel exam came back and it came back positive for Coccidia. What are the side effects and long term damage of this protozone? Help please. I dont want to loose my baby girl.

Coccidia, if untreated, causes a painfuldeath. It requires medication, I believe the correct med is Flagyl but your vet will advise. With medication and good care, geckos with coccidia can be stabilized and live many years, though they must always be quarantined from other geckos and never bred.

I hope you don't have it around any other leo that may become infected. Leos can survive it and do well but it pretty much codems them to a single life. I hope it does well awfull small little guy. Justy go by your vets recomidation for treatment. Seems funny kinda being the appetite was so good.

I know that coccidia can affect other animals as well and there have been theories that some types of foods or nutrients in the foods aided in building up some resistance (but not an immunity) to the disease. I don't know exactly what they are, but if you look around on the net, some sources might help. Good luck!!!
