Need help with Tiger Salamander idea

ReganZ24 Jun 07, 2004 05:42 PM

Hi

What do you guys /girls think about mixing anoles and Tiger Salamanders?? 77 gallon tank....3 salamanders, 2 anoles..

I havw researched it and they require same lighting, food, temptures, etc....
And was told they woudl work together by several people........

Thought and ideas before I do this

also, can someone give me a basic outline on what salamanders need in their tank?? and how big they get??

I'm going to be a little blunt here....

I'm not sure who gave you the information that they require the same conditions but that person(s) were very mistaken.
Anoles like to have basking sites that run from the upper 80s to low 90s F with an ambient temperature in the upper 70s to low 80s F. Tiger salamanders like it in the mid to upper 60s to very low 70s F and can stress out and potentially die at temps in the low 80s. Beginning to see a problem here....

Anoles kept as humid and damp as tigers prefer it can and often do develop skin infections. Tigers kept as dry as anoles prefer it will probably die.

Here is a good care fact and care sheet on tiger salamanders.

Thank you ed...

So if i left the temp.. in the middle for the two animals at 70???Would that be okay.......And is it a must for a basking site? and if so wouldnt the salamanders just aviod that spot???

Thought I had figurered out what would go together.....is there anything that can go toegteher?????????

help plz

Here's a nice article from livingunderworld.org that talks
about mixing you should read. very informative. I would suspect
if you love these animals you will want them to be happy, so
here are some tips on mixing species.

you would have to have the basking site for the anoles and this would cause the tank to be too warm for tiger salamanders.

There are possible combinations but they are not easy to maintain in the long run. Some suggestions would be

dwarf sirens (Pseudobranchus spp) and green tree frogs, squirrel tree frogs, or grey tree frogs.

Central red-spotted newts (N. v. louisianensis) with squirrel treefrogs, or bird voiced tree frogs.

Central redspotted newts with dwarf sirens

anoles and southern five-lined skinks (Eumeces inexpectus)

Green tree frogs and oak toads (Bufo quercicus)

These are all possibilities of sympatric animals that have similar temperature requirements.
It is really not something for beginners to try as it often fails.

Thnaks ed

I reailly like the idea of

anoles and southern five-lined skinks (Eumeces inexpectus

the skinks wont eat the anoles?

Can you give me a website for the skinks so I can find out what i need to feed/put in tank?
also....can all skinks go with anoles...or just the one you mentioned??

thanks for you rhelp

I would not recommend most other species of skinks as most of them (such as broadheaded skinks) may get big enough to eat the anoles. If you use adult anoles then they should be large enough to not get eaten.

There is a terrarium book by Bartlett that would help you out a lot with your setups. I just can't remember the exact title off the top of my head.
